Liberation Theology - Miguel Alonzo Macias vs. Cardinal Ratzinger

Posted by missf on Jan 24th, 2008

Here are two sides of the debate on Liberation Theology and what it has achieved.

The first link is Macias’ view of how Liberation Theology has had a positive effect on his community and others, he states that ‘our faith [Christianity] obliges us to speak out for justice.’ Macias says that it is the duty of Christians to make changes in this world in order to start building a new world.

The second link is to a paper written by Cardinal Ratzinger (who is now the current Pope) about Liberation Theology. He looks at Liberation theology from the CELAM conference in Medellin (1967) through to the CELAM conference in Puebla (1978) and asserts his position that ‘liberation theology…constitutes a fundamental threat to the faith of the Church’.

Give each of them a read and tell me what you think…do you agree with either party? Do you think they both have valid points? Or are they both off the mark?
